tci20110817 - Nge fathasi

Description

This dataset contains files recorded from Abia Bai who talks about a ceremony in Rouku village, Western Province, Papua New Guinea. The ceremony took place two days after the recording was made. The ceremony is about a wedding and a children's holding (nge fathasi) that is going to take place at the same time. Children are lifted up and held for the first time after their birth by their relatives and their namesakes.

The dataset includes:

  • audio file (tci20110817a.wav)
  • transcription file (tci20110817a.eaf)

The material was recorded by Christian Döhler as part of a language documentation project for his PhD. The project was located at the School of Culture, History and Language at the Australian National University, Canberra. For the most part it was funded by the DOBES project of the Volkswagen Foundation.
