Description

Bombus hortorum hortorum (Linnaeus, 1761)

It is spread over the northern half of the Iberian Peninsula, preferably in wet areas, between 150 (in the north) and 2200 m (Ornosa & Ortiz-Sánchez 2004).

At present it has been collected in Pyrenean forestal and supraforestal temperate-oceanic grasslands, with patches of subalpine scrub and scree slopes, between 950 and 1992 m (Fig. 7), on Aconitum napellus L., Aconitum vulparia Reich., Carduus acanthoides L., Centaurea scabiosa L., Cirsium vulgare (Savi) Ten., Cirsium acaule (L.) Scop., Digitalis purpurea L., Echium plantagineum (Nox.), Eryngium bourgatii Gouan., Gentiana lutea L., Lotus corniculatus L., Medicago sativa L., Melilotus officinalis L., Mentha suaveolens Ehrh., Phlomis lychnitis L., Prunella vulgaris L., Reseda lutea L., Silene acaulis (L.) Jacq., Salvia pratensis L., Trifolium pratense L. and Vicia cracca L.

According to the current data, this species exhibits a narrower elevational range (Fig. 7), but it is not regarded as being scarce or threatened (Table 2).
