Heteropriacanthus carolinus

Description

Heteropriacanthus carolinus (Cuvier, 1829).

Pacific Glasseye. To 51 cm (20 in) TL (Robertson and Allen 2002). Indo-Pacific; western Pacific Ocean north to Yonaguni-jima Island, Japan (Koeda et al. 2016); Santa Catalina Island, southern California (Walker et al. 2020); Isla Guadalupe, central Baja California (Grove and Lavenberg 1997) to Panama (Fricke et al. 2020), or perhaps Chile (Starnes 1988), and at least around Isla Cerralvo, Gulf of California (Galván-Magaña et al. 1996), and Islas Galápagos (Grove and Lavenberg 1997). Depth: intertidal to 300 m (984 ft) (min.: Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California; max.: Hureau in Quéro et al. 1990). We follow Fernandez-Silva and Ho (2017) and separate this species from the previously believed to be circumglobal Heteropriacanthus cruentatus (Lacepède, 1801).
