Eumicrotremus barbatus

Description

Eumicrotremus barbatus (Lindberg & Legeza, 1955).

Papillose Lumpsucker. To 7 cm (2.8 in) TL (Personal communication: University of Washington, Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture Fish Collection, Seattle, Washington). Sea of Okhotsk off Hokkaido, Japan (Kido 1984); Pacific Ocean off Paramushir Island, Kuril Islands (Lindberg and Legeza 1955); Aleutian Islands from Near Islands (Personal communication: University of Washington, Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture Fish Collection, Seattle, Washington) to south of Unimak Island (Mecklenburg and Sheiko 2003). Depth: “At the shore” (Ueno 1970) to 210 m (693 ft) (Kido 1984). “(DNA) sequences for papillose lumpsucker E. barbatus from the Aleutian Islands unexpectedly fell within the E. orbis clade and it is evident that the relationship between these two forms needs to be reevaluated” (Mecklenburg and Steinke 2015). This is one of several species of Eumicrotremus known only from males (Voskoboinikova et al., 2020; Duane Stevenson, pers. obs.). It also has a DNA barcode sequence essentially indistinguishable from Eumicrotremus orbis (Günther, 1861) (Mecklenburg and Steinke 2015; Kai et al., 2015); thus the relationship between these two forms is uncertain. Despite this similarity, Voskoboinikova and Nazarkin (2015) established a new genus, Georgimarinus, for this species.
