Off San Francisco, northern California (Personal communication: Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History Fish Collection, Los Angeles, California) to Chile (4°05’N, 78°36’W) (Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California). Deep midwater; depth: primarily 167–3,000 m (528–9,840 ft) (min.: Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California; max.: Charter in Moser 1996).
