Description

Scolopsis temporalis (Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1830) —Rainbow monocle bream (Fig. 76)

Status at New Ireland. New record, based on specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005, and by Barry C. Russell during 7–28 June 2014. A specimen photographed at Lissenung Island, Kavieng District, 3 m depth, by Dean Tully on 16 Sept. 2012; another at St. KVG 14 in Kavieng District, by Serge Andréfouët on 16 Aug. 2014; a video of a specimen taken in Alexander Passage, southeast of New Hanover, at 5–14 m depth, St. KR 96, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Eastern Indonesia and New Guinea east to Fiji, south to New Caledonia. Solitary or in groups, in sand-rubble areas adjacent to coastal or lagoon coral reefs, 2–30 m depth. Marine.
