Description

Waldeckia tangaroa sp. nov.

(Figs 22–24, 25 f)

Types. Holotype male, 25.0 mm, AM P.69096, east of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia (33°3.6’S 152°48.8’E), 8/10/1982, Menzies trawl, 2632–2698 m, coll. R.T. Springthorpe & W.F. Ponder, RV Tangaroa. Paratypes: 1 male, 15.5 mm, AM P.69095, east of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia (33°2.6’S 153°4.4’E), 8/ 10/1982, Menzies trawl, 3588–3658 m, coll. R.T. Springthorpe, RV Tangaroa; 1 specimen, 12.5 mm, AM P.69097, same collection data as holotype.

Other material examined. 1 female, ~11.0 mm, NMV J46812, 96 km S of Point Hicks, Victoria, Australia (38°40.29'S 149°18.06'E), 25/10/1988, WHOI epibenthic sled, 2900 m, compacted clay, coll. G.C.B. Poore et al. from the RV Franklin.

Etymology. Named for the New Zealand Research Vessel Tangaroa from which the type material species was collected. Used as a noun in apposition.

Diagnostic description. Head lateral cephalic lobe large, broad, subacute. Antenna 1 peduncular article 1 with anterodistal lobe reaching halfway along article 2. Labrum, epistome and upper lip separate, upper lip protruding, apically subacute. Mandible palp article 2 anterodistal margin setose; article 3 with marginal and apical setae. Labium without apical stylets on each lobe. Gnathopod 1 parachelate; basis anterior margin with slender setae; propodus posterior margin smooth. Gnathopod 2 minutely chelate; carpus long; propodus palm slightly obtuse, straight; dactylus fitting palm. Pereopod 6 basis posteroventral margin rounded, distally truncated. Pereopod 7 basis, posterior margin slightly rounded, minutely crenate, posteroventral margin rounded. Epimeron 3 posteroventral corner subquadrate. Urosomite 1 with small dorsodistal acute spine. Uropod 1 rami subequal in length; uropod 2 rami subequal in length; uropod 3 inner ramus shorter than outer ramus, not reaching article 2 of outer ramus.

Depth range. 2632–3658 m.

Remarks. Waldeckia tangaroa is similar to W. obesa in two interesting characters: the labrum has the epistome and upper lip separate and urosomite 1 has a small dorsodistal acute spine. It differs from other species of Waldeckia in having a large anterodistally produced lobe on antenna 1 peduncular article 1 and a protruding apically acute upper lip.

Distribution. Australia: east of Newcastle, New South Wales, Tasman Sea.
