Description

Thagria unica, sp. nov.

(Plate 3B, Figs. 139–146)

Length Male 8.00 mm; female unknown

External morphology. Somewhat long, slender species. General color dark brown with numerous yellow markings; crown yellow with 2 suffused brown spots on disk; eyes dark brown; pronotum yellow with 4 broadly suffused brown stripes, inner 2 long, nearly extending to anterior margin, outer 2 short; mesonotum yellow with 2 short triangulate dark brown markings in lateral angles, small suffused brown spot medially; forewings dark brown with numerous yellow spots varying size and shape, veins dark brown (Fig. 3B); face yellow with brown markings along lateral margins of clypeus, short brown longitudinal stripe apically, dark brown longitudinal stripe on middle of clypellus, brown markings on lora and gena. Head narrower than pronotum, anterior margin obtusely rounded; crown broad, slightly wider than eye width, produced distally about ¼ entire median length, lateral margins convergent basally, disk slightly elevated; eyes large, semiglobular; pronotum large, about ¼ longer medially than crown, surface sparsely bullated; mesonotum large, slightly longer medially than pronotum; forewings typical; clypeus long, broad, lateral margins slightly tapered distally; clypellus short, narrow, base narrower than apex of clypeus, not inflated, apex truncate.

Male genitalia. Pygofer in lateral view with moderately long, caudoventral lobe, caudodorsal margin with pair of short digitate lobes (Fig. 139); pygofer caudodorsal processes, dorsal view (Fig. 140); aedeagus symmetrical, long, reaching to apex of lateral spine of ventral paraphysis (Figs. 141,142); ventral paraphysis in dorsal view asymmetrical, somewhat slender, tapered in apical 1/3, lateral margin opposite spine flanged about 2/3 length of paraphysis, very long subapical spine distad of middle, projecting laterally in lateral view, in lateral view broad in basal ½ (Figs. 141, 142); connective and style in dorsal view moderately long, extending beyond base of paraphysis, apex sharply pointed (Fig. 143), in lateral view angled in basal 1/3 (Fig. 144); dorsal connective in dorsobasal view broadly V-shape in basal half, convergent in distal half, rami attached to base of ventral processes of segment X, stem absent (Fig. 145); subgenital plate typical, with sparse, very fine setae (Fig. 146).

Material examined. Holotype male. MALAYSIA. Benom Mts., 15 km. E. Kampong Dong. 700 m., 3.53°N 102.01° E., 1.iv.1998, Dembicky & Pacholako, leg. (BRNO).

Etymology. The species is descriptive for the single, long spine distad of middle on lateral margin of ventral paraphysis.

Remarks. This species is nearest to unidigitata Nielson in male genitalia and can be distinguished by the much shorter style (nearly reaching apex of ventral paraphysis in unidigitata) and by the broken, yellow chevron marking at base of forewings (absent in unidigitata).
