Smaraldia springthorpei sp. nov.

Type material. HOLOTYPE, female, 4.3 mm, AM P.39217, rocks near Migo Island, Port Harding, Torbay Bay, Western Australia, 35°04'S 117°39'E, 6–7 m, small branched alga with compound tunicate on underside of branches, 15 December 1983, R. T. Springthorpe & J.K. Lowry, stn WA-152. PARATYPE, female, 4 mm, AM P.39218, Burnie, Tasmania, Australia, 41°04'S 145°54'E, 2 m, rocky bottom, 24 June–11 July 1985, D.A. Ritz.

Type locality. Rocks near Migo Island, Port Harding, Torbay Bay, Western Australia, Southern Ocean, 35°04'S 117°39'E, 6–7 m depth.

Etymology. Named for Roger Springthorpe, who collected many of the species used in our lysianassoid studies and has made all of the plates.

Description. Head lateral cephalic lobe large, broadly rounded; ventral margin curved. Antenna 1 peduncular article 1 without posterodistal spine; accessory flagellum 2-articulate, article 1 long; flagellum with strong 1-field callynophore in female, [male not known]. Mandible lacinia mobilis absent; lamina dentata absent; accessory setal row absent; molar absent; palp attached distally; palp article 2 broad, as long as article 3; article 3 tapered distally. Maxilla 1 outer plate with 7 setal-teeth in 4/3 arrangement, setal-teeth smooth; palp absent. Maxilliped inner plate absent; outer plate medium size; palp 4-articulate, article 4 large. Gnathopod 1 subchelate; ischium smaller than propodus, not swollen posteroproximally; carpus extremely compressed; propodus length about 1.8 × breadth, posterior margin absent, palm with produced corner, corner of palm without robust seta; dactylus reaching to corner of palm. Gnathopod 2 palm minute, obtuse. Pereonite 4 without dorsal spines. Pereonite 5 without dorsal spines. Pereopod 5 merus with posteroproximal shoulder. Pereopod 6 basis with posteroventral lobe weakly produced; merus as broad as long, without posteroproximal shoulder. Pereopod 7 basis subovate with posterior margin smooth. Epimeron 3 posterior margin without projections, posteroventral corner broadly rounded. Uropod 3 biramous, inner ramus extending less than halfway along outer ramus. Telson longer than broad, entire.

Distribution. Southern Australia, Southern Ocean; 2–7 m depth.
