Description

Drummondia luce sp. nov.

(Figs 4–6)

Drummondia luce De Broyer et al., 2007: 158 (nomen nudum).

Type material. HOLOTYPE, female, ovigerous, 11.0 mm, SMNH type no. 8131, Bajo Vettor Pisani, Golfo Corcovado, Chile, 42°46.5'S 73°28.1'W, 8 m, coarse clean sand, circular dredge, 17 February 1949, Lund University Chile Expedition stn M65A. PARATYPE, immature, 3.8 mm, SMNH type no. 8132, same data as holotype.

Etymology. The species name is an acronym of the Lund University Chile Expedition, which collected the type material; used as a noun in apposition.

Diagnostic description. Head lateral cephalic lobe large, broadly rounded; ventral margin curved. Antenna 1 peduncular article 1 with posterodistal spine; accessory flagellum 2-articulate, article 1 short; flagellum with weak 1-field callynophore in female, [male not known]. Mandible lacinia mobilis a simple robust seta ; accessory setal row partially modified into weak lamina dentata; molar a nonsetose flap; palp article 2 broad, as long as article 3; article 3 with subparallel margins. Maxilla 1 outer plate with 11 setal-teeth in 7/4 arrangement, some outer row setal-teeth with lateral and medial cusps; palp absent. Maxilliped inner plate small; outer plate large; palp 4- articulate, article 4 large. Gnathopod 1 chelate; ischium smaller than propodus, not swollen posteroproximally; carpus extremely compressed; propodus length about 1.9 × breadth, posterior margin well developed, with produced corner, corner of palm with complex robust seta; dactylus reaching to corner of palm. Gnathopod 2 palm minute, obtuse. Pereonite 4 without dorsal spines. Pereonite 5 with 1 dorsal spine . Pereopod 5 basis subovate; merus with posteroproximal shoulder. Pereopod 6 basis with posteroventral lobe produced beyond ischium; merus longer than broad, with posteroproximal shoulder. Pereopod 7 basis subrectangular with posterior margin smooth. Oostegites from gnathopod 2 to pereopod 5. Epimeron 3 posterior margin without projections, posteroventral corner broadly rounded. Uropod 3 biramous, inner ramus extending less than halfway along outer ramus. Telson as long as broad, entire.

Remarks. Drummondia luce is the only species of Drummondia with a molar. It is also the only species of Drummondia known to occur outside eastern Australia.

Distribution. Southern Chile, eastern South Pacific Ocean; 8 m depth.
