Bolithomyza Rondani 1856

Description

55. Bolithomyza Rondani, 1856: 197.

ORIGINALLY INCLUDED SPECIES: Bolithomyza spinulina Rondani, 1856.

TYPE SPECIES: Bolithomyza spinulina Rondani, 1856, by original designation.

CURRENT STATUS: Nomen oblitum; senior (but invalid) synonym of Zygomyia Winnertz, 1863, nomen protectum [teste this work].

FAMILY: MYCETOPHILIDAE.

REMARKS: Hackman in Hackman et al. (1988: 295) incorrectly stated that Bolithomyza is a nomen nudum. Rondani (1856: 197) clearly gave characters in his key to distinguish the genus-group name and its only included species, Bolithomyza spinulina Rondani, 1856. Bolithomyza Rondani, 1856 and Zygomyia Winnertz, 1863 are currently considered synonyms. Acceptance of Bolithomyza Rondani as valid would upset stability as Zygomyia Winnertz is in prevailing usage as the valid name for the taxon. Bolithomyza has to our knowledge not been used as a valid genus-group name since 1899, while Zygomyia has been used in more than 25 works by at least 10 authors in the last 50 years and encompassing a span of not less than 10 years, including the following: Bechev (1994, 1995); Caspers (1980); Chandler (1991 b, 1994); Chandler & Ribeiro (1995); Joost & Plassmann (1979); Kjaerandsen et al. (2007); Lehnebach et al. (2005); Lehr (1999); Matile (1980, 1989); Ostroverkhova & Shtakel’berg (1988); Plassmann (1970, 1971, 1974); Ramsaite (1998); Ribeiro (2003); Ševčík (2000, 2001, 2006); Søli (1994); Wu (1999); Wu & Wang (2008); Zaitzev (1989b, 2002, 2003). In the interests of nomenclatural stability, we hereby invoke reversal of precedence (ICZN Code Article 23.9.2) and declare Bolithomyza Rondani, 1856 a nomen oblitum and Zygomyia Winnertz, 1863 a nomen protectum.

[Bolithophila] Rondani, 1856: 203.

CURRENT STATUS: Incorrect subsequent spelling of Bolitophila Meigen, 1818.

FAMILY: BOLITOPHILIDAE.

REMARKS: The earliest mention of Bolitophila Meigen, 1818 using the spelling “ Bolithophila ” that we have found in this study is in Guérin (1827: 410), as an incorrect subsequent spelling. In Rondani (1856) this is either an incorrect subsequent spelling or unjustified emendation (by virtue of similar spelling changes in two or more names from “t” to “th” in the same work). We thus follow ICZN Code Article 33.5 in treating this spelling in Rondani (1856) as an incorrect subsequent spelling.

[Bolitofila] Rondani, 1840a: 10.

CURRENT STATUS: Incorrect subsequent spelling of Bolitophila Meigen, 1818.

FAMILY: BOLITOPHILIDAE.

REMARKS: Criteria for making this name available as an emendation were not found to be fulfilled in this work.

[Bombilius] Rondani, 1844c: 104.

CURRENT STATUS: Incorrect subsequent spelling of Bombylius Linnaeus, 1758 or subsequent usage of Bombilius Dufour, 1833.

FAMILY: BOMBYLIIDAE.

REMARKS: The earliest mention of Bombylius Linnaeus, 1758 using the spelling “ Bombilius ” that we have found in this study is Bombilius Dufour (1833: 215), n. syn., as an unjustified emendation made available by similar spelling changes in two or more names from “y” to “i” in the same work.
