VIR MAXIMUS Database
Description
This database is a pilot version of the WP2 (Database) under the project “VIR MAXIMUS: Tracking the transfer of moral-political ideas through the reception of B. Gracián’s texts (XVII-XXI cent.)”. For more details see the project web page.
The Database contains the lexicographical data on the first translations of Baltasar Gracián’s “Oráculo manual y arte de prucencia” into the main European languages. The object of analysis is the way in which the first translators of Gracián’s “Oráculo” throughout Europe transposed the terms in which Gracián describes the intellectual and moral qualities of ‘vir maximus’, a perfect man on the top of his abilities ready for political, military and cultural action.
The data are presented in two formats that can be consulted alternatively, according to the need:
- Searchable dataset (.odb file) with one request example,
- Zipped separate datasets on every translation (.ods files).
The README file provides information on the project and a synthetic description of the structure of the Database.
