Bodies, Memory, Territories. A Testimonial Theatre Experience with Colombian Afro-Descendant Women

Description

The article presents the results of a pilot creative process inspired by Theatre of Witness and delivered to a group of Colombian Afro-descendant women. The workshop was one of the first applications of this theatrical technique in Colombia and the first on memory and identity of Afro-descendant people in Latin America. The results include a play that weaves autobiographical stories with significant objects the participants chose to represent their connection with their bodies, memories and territories. On stage, each participant tells the story of an ancestor and imagines that an object representing her connection with her territory has words, memories and feelings, and makes it speak and act as a living object. The article reflects on the relationship between the women’ bodies, their autobiographical memories and the territories where these memories were shaped. In the conclusions, we recommend the intentional use of Testimonial Theatre to accompany the co-construction and constant reinvention of identities based on embodiment and collective creation. In particular, this method proved effective in accompanying afro-descendant communities to creatively face the challenges of the present time, such as the loss of their traditional culture, uprooting and migration to the urban areas and the impact of the armed conflict on their social fabric.
