ACTIVE LEARNING STRATEGIES AND HIGHER ORDER THINKING SKILLS OF GRADE 10 STUDENTS

The development of 21st-century life requires higher-level thinking ability developmental for learners. HOTS learning is characterized by analysis, evaluation and creating, logical reasoning, consideration and critical thinking, problem-solving and creative thinking. Active learning strategies helps to engage the students to participants in the learning process. The study aimed to determine the effect of active learning strategies in higher – order thinking skills of grade 10 students of Dr. Panfilo Castro National High School during the school year 2020 – 2021. One hundred selected grade 10 students were used as respondents of the study. The selection is depending on the attendance or participation of the guardians during the retrieval of answer sheet. The first group was exposed to case – based learning and the second group was exposed in visual – organization activity. A 60 items pre – test and posttest used in the study were validated by subject coordinator, a master teacher, a head teacher and research adviser. The study found out that the pre – test scores of the respondents in the two experimental group as to their higher – order thinking skills specifically, critical thinking and creative thinking skills, were same indicating that the students have low performance level before subjecting to the treatment. The posttest scores of the students of both group showed improvement on their scores after the treatment. It was found that there is no significant difference on the pre – test scores of both groups in terms of their critical thinking and creative thinking skills. It was revealed that there is a significant difference between the pre – test and posttest performance of the students on their critical thinking skills as well on their creative thinking skills. It also shown that there is a significant difference on the posttest scores between the case – based learning and visual – organization activity in terms of critical thinking skills and no significance in terms of creative thinking skills.
