Visual Storytelling of Language Documentation - Question Group

  • 1. School of Arts, Languages and Cultures, University of Manchester

Description

The storyboard is the outcome of the project "Visual Storytelling of Language Documentation" of the Undergraduate Scholars Programme 2020-2021, University of Manchester. The project is led by Dr Margit Bowler and Dr Vera Hohaus. The three student investigators created the storyboard to study the question structures across-linguistically. There are 14 participants invited in total whose native languages include French, Italian, Gujarati, Hindi, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Wenzhounese, and Sichuanhua. They have received e-vouchers after their participation. Due to COVID-19, all the meetings with participants are held via zoom. The investigators show participants the storyboard, tell the story background, and read the prompts. Then, participants retell the story in their own native languages. Finally, the investigators transcribe the retelling or literally translate the retelling into English if she does not command that language.

The documents include individual image panels, prompts textfile, a PowerPoint with the storyboard (with prompts), as well as a PDF with the storyboard which is used for the online interview.

DESCRIPTION: This is a story about a baby fish who keeps asking questions on the way to his birthday surprise party with his mom.
