ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1850a: 120 (key), 124 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in Italiae centralis collibus [hills in central Italy]”.

TYPE MATERIAL: 3 ♂♂, syntypes (one covered with mold) (MZUF: Box 4): Eumerus Mgn / barbiventris Rnd., analis Oliv., ♂ / 133; 4 ♀♀, syntypes (MZUF: Box 4): Eumerus Mgn barbiventris Rnd., ♀ / 133; 1 ♂, syntype (MZUF: Box A): Eumerus barbiventris R., 44, Apenn. [= Apennines] / 393 44; 1 ♂, syntype (MRSN: Box 53): Parma / Eumerus barbiventris Rond. / Museo di Zoologia della Università di Torino; 1 ♂, syntype (MSNC: Box DIPTERA Ex collezione Rondani - I): Merodon barbiventris Rnd. ♂ Apenn. [= Apennines] / Coll. Rondani, scatola n° 3, posiz. D-13 / Museo di Storia Naturale Università di Pisa, Calci (PI) ex collezione Rondani; 1 ♀, syntype (MZUB: Box 320): 20 26 / Eumerus barbiventris Rond., ex a. parmensi / barbiventris Rndn., ♀, Parma.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Eumerus ruficornis Meigen, 1822 (Peck 1988: 161, Belcari et al. 1995a: 16).

REMARKS: Rondani (1850a: 124) described both sexes of Eumerus barbiventris without specifying the exact number of specimens and not giving a range of lengths, but presumably from more than one specimen because he wrote: “ non rarus [not rare]”. We found 11 syntypes in this study.
