Description

Genus Gymnoscalpellum Newman & Ross, 1971

Gymnoscalpellum Newman & Ross, 1971: 105; Zevina, 1978b: 1345.

Diagnosis. Sexes separate; capitulum of adult female with 14 reduced plates; tergum in shape of inverted V; scutum either with or without minute, exceedingly narrow, apicolateral arm 1/5 or less length of tergal margin and deeply notched basal margin; upper latus either banana-shaped or bifid with long arm; carinal latus longer than wide, umbo at basi-carinal angle; inframedian latus small, triangular, with concave basal margin, umbo apical; rostral latus wider than high; caudal appendage long, comprising four or more segments.

Type-species. Gymnoscalpellum tarasovi Newman & Ross, 1971.

Composition. Six species.

Distribution. Worldwide, excluding Arctic. Known depth range 940 to 3020 m.
