Description

Hyperietta stebbingi Bowman, 1973

Hyperietta stebbingi Bowman, 1973: 61, figs. 43‒45; Siegel-Causey, 1982: 148 (key), 150; Vinogradov et al., 1996: 392 (key), 395, fig. 170; Zeidler, 2004: 32 (key), 34; García Madrigal, 2007: 149 (list); Valencia & Giraldo, 2009: 268 (tab. 1); 2011: 1492 (tab. 1), fig. 4; Lavaniegos & Hereu, 2009: 142 (tab. 1), 151 (Appendix 1); Lavaniegos, 2014: 4 (tab. 1), fig. 5.

Hyperiietta stebbingi — Brusca & Hendrickx, 2005: 150 (list).

Material examined. 15M, 1F in five localities (Fig. 1). TALUD III. St. 19B (25°18’24”N, 109°18’36”W), August 20, 1991, 1F, I-K, from surface to 600 m (TD, 1890 m) (ECO-CH-Z-10382). TALUD VII. St. 15 B (23°25’06”N, 107°47’31”N), June 7, 2001, 1 M, MN, from surface to 1425 m (TD, 2320 m) (ECO-CH-Z-10398); St. 36 (25°42’37”N, 110°04’35”W), June 9, 2001, 3M, MN, from surface to 1390 m (TD, 2400 m) (ICML-EMU-12773). TALUD XII. St. 15C (17°27’51”N, 102°10’43”W), March 31, 2008, 1M, MN, from surface to 1530 m (TD, 1880 m) (ICML-EMU-12774).

Distribution. Cosmopolitan in warm seas. In the eastern Pacific distributed off the Columbia River, USA, western Baja California, and to the Gulf of California, Mexico (Brusca & Hendrickx 2005; García Madrigal 2007). Our observations allow an extension of its southernmost distribution limit in the eastern Pacific to SW Mexico (17°27’51”N). Present in surface waters (Vinogradov et al. 1996).

Remarks. Siegel-Causey (1982) reported this species in the southern Gulf of California in three seasons and classified it as an “uncommon” species in the area but noted its presence throughout the Gulf in earlier samplings. A surface water species, recorded in the 0‒66 m depth layer (García Madrigal 2007), but also mentioned as a “middepth” species by Siegel-Causey (1982), roughly in the 100‒500 m depth range.
