Figure 1 in The forgotten type specimen of the grey seal [Halichoerus grypus (Fabricius, 1791)] from the island of Amager, Denmark
Description
Figure 1. The grey seal type specimen as illustrated in Otto Fabricius' monograph 'The Seals of Greenland' (A), and a digital photograph (B) and 3D scan (C) of the skull located at the Natural History Museum of Denmark. The arrows point out similarities in (1) the size and shape of the gap between the frontal, maxillary, palatine and orbitosphenoid bones in the left orbit; (2) the tilt of the left sphenofrontal suture; and (3) the position of the foveolae in the caudal end of the left frontal bone. Note that the zygomatic bones and the mandibles have been lost. The full 3D scan is available in ply-format in the Supporting Information, Data S1.
