Distribution. Western Atlantic— Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul), Uruguay, Argentina (Forest & de Saint Laurent 1968; Coelho & Ramos-Porto 1987; Rieger 1998; Melo 1999; Nucci & Melo 2007; Fransozo et al. 2011; Meireles et al. 2012; Spivak et al. 2019).

Remarks. A preliminary molecular phylogeny placed species from the western Atlantic, including P. exilis from South America, in a group analogous to the group II “ exilis ” sensu Forest & de Saint Laurent (1968) and McLaughlin (1974) (Olguín & Mantelatto 2013). Sequences accession numbers (GenBank): CCDB 767—16S (FJ869147), CCDB 510—COI (MF490060) (Mantelatto et al. 2009, 2018).
