Remarks. I found the lectotype and two paralectotypes of S. indica designated by Vercammen-Grandjean in the BMNH collection. The slides have original labels with the species name Schongastia indicus Hirst or Schongastia indica Hirst and collection data, but have no accession numbers of BMNH. Additional labels have the logo of G.W. Hooper Foundation and are signed by the hand of Vercammen-Grandjean: Schoengastiella indica indica V-G, 1969. That act of designation was not published; the name Schoengastiella was used instead of Schoengastia obviously by a mistake.
In addition, there are four slides labeled as “types” of Neoschoengastia (corrected to Ascoschoengastia) indica in that collection: 1) “Type” (BMNH 1948.2.3.4) ex Rattus rattus (syn. Rattus rattus kandiyanus), Ceylon, coll. C.D. Radford. The slide has an additional label signed by the hand of Vercammen-Grandjean: “ Holotype Schoengastiella indica ceylonica ”; 2) “ Lectotype ” (BMNH 1948.2.3.7), nymph dorsal, reared from larva on rat, Maldive Islands, coll. C.D. Radford; 3) “ Lectotype ” (BMNH 1948.2.3.8), nymph ventral, reared from larva on rat, Maldive Islands, coll. C.D. Radford; 4) “ Lectotype ” (corrected to “Type”) (BMNH 1948.2.3.10), adult, Maldive Islands, palm tree, 2 Feb. 1945, coll. C.D. Radford. These slides have nothing in common with the original type series of Hirst and thus should be regarded as none-type specimens.
