Description

Myotis cf. montivagus Dobson, 1874

Large brown myotis

Vespertilio montivagus Dobson, 1874: 237; Hotha, Yunnan, China.

Distribution

Yunnan to Fukien and Chihli (China), NE India, Myanmar, Vietnam, Lao PDR, NE Thailand, W Malaysia, Borneo.

Distribution in Lao PDR (Fig. 45): Bolikhamxai Province: Nam Pan (SMF collection); Khammouan Province: Nam Pakkatan, Nakai Plateau (ROM/ SMF collections); Phongsali Province: Hat Hin (Ban Hathin) (MNHN collection).

Taxonomic note

Görföl et al. (2013) reviewed the currently recognized subspecies of M. montivagus (sensu Corbet and Hill 1992) and proposed that each should be recognized as a distinct species. Furthermore, they suggested that specimens from Laos and Vietnam differ from the geographically closest named form, M. m. montivagus, and probably represent a new, undescribed species. The appropriate name for a second species occurring in Lao PDR, genetically related to this complex, called Myotis CMF sp. E in Francis et al. (2010), has not yet been determined.
