Quantum Tunneling NEMS Devices for Bio-Medical Applications

  • 1. Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling, University of Warsaw

Description

Quantum Precision Instruments Asia (Quantum-π) is developing Nano Electro-Mechanical System (NEMS) sensors utilizing phenomenon of quantum tunneling of electrons[1-3]. The resulting products will eventually serve as sensors of dynamic quantities such as vibrations, pressure and flow. Due to their unprecedented sensitivity and exceedingly small size – the entire dynamic NEMS sensor will fit in an envelope of ~20 x 20 μm (or 1/5th diameter of a human hair) – our NEMS sensors could potentially be very useful in a range of bio-medical applications such as: 1. Pressure sensors 2. Flow Meters 3. Ultra sensitive microphones In this short talk we will outline benefits arising from extreme miniaturisation and unprecedented sensitivity of quantum tunnelling NEMS sensors and wireless sensor networks for “nearly non-invasive” continuous monitoring of normal and abnormal organ functions and medical diagnostics in wide range of clinical conditions. We will also describe how developments in angular and positional metrology, enabled by quantum tunneling nanoTrek® devices from Quantum-π, may impact structural molecular studies in the context of drug discovery and Ternary & Quaternary protein structure determination.
