Description

This article discusses and analyzes the information to Western Sources of the XV century, which contains informa-tion about the religious life of the population of Northern Russia. During this period, renewed interest in the northern Russian region on the part of European travelers, diplomats, chroniclers. In this paper, we study three road notes (Gil-bert de Lannoa, Giosafat Barbaro, Ambrogio Contarini) and a Chronicle (Jan Dlugosz). All authors demonstrate indif-ference to the religious theme, so the information is not much. G. Lannoa notes about the presence in the leadership of Novgorod of the bishop and the existence of the episcopal residence at the church of St. Sofia. G. Barbaro briefly describes the religious situation in Novgorod, together with in-formation from ancient sources, gives a complete picture of the religious life in the city. A. Contarini reports about the attitude of the Moscow population to catholicism and they have the head of the church. J. Dlugosz tells about a special Russian church and calls them schismatics. All sources say either about Greek religion in Northern Russian population, or about a different religion than that of foreigners. In addition attracted ancient Russian sources, in particular annals.
