Orangutan nest surveys

Description

Description:

Short project by students enrolled on Mres Tropical Forest Ecology to quantify orangutan density along transects cross logged forest-recently salvage logged forest boundaries. Method was distance-sampling of orangutan nests.

Project: This dataset was collected as part of the following SAFE research project: MRes Tropical Forest Ecology Field Course

XML metadata: GEMINI compliant metadata for this dataset is available here

Files: This consists of 1 file: TFE_orangutans.xlsx

TFE_orangutans.xlsx

This file contains dataset metadata and 2 data tables:

  1. transects (described in worksheet transects)

Description: Information on location of transects and date they were surveyed. Transects are recorded in the Locations sheet from GPS coordinates collected at the start and end point with a linear line interpolated between them. This over-simplifies the exact route of the trail which had twists and turns. A slightly more accurate trail could be reconstructed by joining GPS coordinates of individual nest sightings along each trail.

    Number of fields: 7

    Number of data rows: 12

    Fields:

    • Transect: Transect ID (Field type: location)
    • ec5_uuid: Code to link transect data to nest sightings (Field type: id)
    • Team_members: Names of team members collecting data (Field type: id)
    • Date: Date of data collection (Field type: date)
    • Block: SAFE project area in which transect was located (Field type: location)
    • Habitat: Habitat type (Field type: categorical)
    • Nest_sighting: Number of orangutan nests (Field type: abundance)
  2. nests (described in worksheet nests)

    Description: individual nest sighting records

    • Position: Position of nest in tree (Field type: categorical)
    • Comments: Free text comments related to the nest; includes data on where in the tree the nest is located (Field type: comments)

Date range: 2018-01-22 to 2018-01-27

Latitudinal extent: 4.6837 to 4.7413

Longitudinal extent: 117.5304 to 117.6583

Taxonomic coverage:
All taxon names are validated against the GBIF backbone taxonomy. If a dataset uses a synonym, the accepted usage is shown followed by the dataset usage in brackets. Taxa that cannot be validated, including new species and other unknown taxa, morphospecies, functional groups and taxonomic levels not used in the GBIF backbone are shown in square brackets.
