Acipenser sturio Linnaeus 1758

Description

* Acipenser sturio Linnaeus, 1758

– Sturgeon; Esturjão, Esturgião, Peixe-rei, Soilho or Sôlho-rei The last known records of sturgeon in Portugal refer to the presence of small specimens (20-30 cm long), during the early 1980s, in the lower Guadiana (Almaça 1988). The species is considered extinct (Rogado et al. 2005). In Portugal there are specimens of A. sturio only in museums and in captivity. For these reasons, A. sturio was not counted in the total number of species in the current list.
