Carcharhinus galapagensis

Description

Carcharhinus galapagensis (Snodgrass & Heller, 1905)

– Galapagos shark; Tubarão-dos-Galápos , According to Ebert & Stehmann (2013), the species Carcharhinus obscurus is very closely related to this species (C. galapagensis) and they are difficult to distinguish from each other. Recent molecular studies suggest that these two species may in fact be a single one, with one of the two forms being found far from landmasses (C. galapagensis) and the other one (C. obscurus) occurring in association with continental shelves and upper slopes (G. Naylor, pers comm. in Ebert & Stehmann 2013). Studies are currently ongoing to determine the relationship between these two species.
