Description

Heterosentis heteracanthus

(syn. Echinorhynchus heteracanthus Linstow, 1896)

Actinopterygii

Odontesthes hatcheri (Eigenmann) (Atheriniformes, Atherinopsidae) (type host). SI: intestine. SD: adult. L: Tierra del Fuego Province. R: Linstow (1896), Porta (1905), Ortubay et al. (1994). C: syntype (NMNH- USNM 1338213; USNPC 37532; ZMB Vermes 6017) (see note below).

Patagonotothen longipes (Steindachner) (Perciformes, Nototheniidae). SI: intestine. SD: adult. L: Tierra del Fuego Province: Beagle Channel (54°59’S, 66º45’W). R: Laskowski and Zdzitowiecki (2009). C: vouchers (NHMUK 07.2.21.13–16).

Patagonotothen tessellata (Richardson) (Perciformes, Nototheniidae). SI: intestine. SD: adult. L: Tierra del Fuego Province: Beagle Channel (54°59’S, 66º45’W). R: Laskowski and Zdzitowiecki (2009).

Note. Linstow (1896) described Heterosentis heteracanthus from Basilichthys microlepidotus (Jenyns) (syn. Atherinichthys microlepidotus) from Tierra del Fuego. The type locality of H. heteracanthus was obtained from the syntype deposited at the NMNH-USNM. In Argentina, Basilichthys microlepidotus is considered a synonym of Odontesthes hatcheri (Ortubay et al. 1994). The Patagonian silverside, Odontesthes hatcheri is a native freshwater atherinid, commonly found in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs from the Andean Region of southern South America (Conte-Grand et al. 2015 and references therein). Currently, no freshwater atherinids have been reported in Tierra del Fuego (Semenas and Trejo, 1997). Therefore, it is possible that the type host for Heterosentis heteracanthus could be other similar marine silverside species, e.g. Odontesthes nigricans (Richardson), with euryhaline habits.
