Valuation in the Deep Sea:
• Relatively large number of valuation studies for coastal
ecosystem services but few applied studies in the deep.
• Number of studies that identify services in deep sea but do
not value benefits derived.
• Limited usage of ES valuation in initial assessment for
MSFD
• Used in EU MAES but more focused on services than values
• Number of qualitative assessments of deep‐sea benthic ESs
(Galparsoro et al., 2014 and Salomidi et al. 2012)
