Scina incerta Chevreux 1900

Description

Scina incerta Chevreux, 1900

Southwest Atlantic: 1013463, 6/383, [56.067°S 56.092°W], 1693–1821 m; 1090403, 6/392, [57.825°S 56.025°W], 2201–2324 m; ex. 1090471, 4/143, [60.05°S 65.225°W], 609 m. Southeast Pacific: 1013465, 10/779, [59.7°S 82.408°W], 2053 m; 1090389, 5/318, [57.242°S 71.008°W], 262 m; 1090438, 10/788, [63.092°S 82.325°W], 915 m; 1090439, 10/789, [63.283°S 82.342°W], 2196 m; 1090463, 11/949, [65.692°S 88.7°W], 1028 m. Southwest Pacific: 1090458, 11/930, [70.142°S 109.808°W], 1391 m.

Remarks: This is one of the most common species of Scina, found in all the world’s oceans, except the Mediterranean Sea. It is common in the 200–1000 m layer but is found more often in depths of 500–700 m

(Vinogradov et al. 1982 /96). It is usually found in warmer waters and has not been recorded from the Arctic Basin or, until now, the Antarctic region. Also, there are no previous records from the Southern Ocean, the most southerly record being from the South Atlantic (35°18’S) (K.H. Barnard 1932). Thus, the above are new records for the Antarctic Zone of the Southwest Atlantic and Pacific Sectors.
