Iraqw Personal Names and Naming Practice

  • 1. University of Dodoma

Description

This talk examines the cultural practice of naming among the Iraqw people of Tanzania, as well as proposes a typology for the types of names given. It is argued that, rather than arbitrary labels, Iraqw personal names are meaningful elements that convey social, historical, and familial information to the wider community.
