Description

The files starting with "plate"/"column"/"needle"/"dendrite"/"Mix1"/Mix2"  contain particle properties of individual simulated unrimed ice particles and model output from the Lagrangian Particle Model, which were analyzed in the publication "Ice Particle Properties Inferred from Aggregation Modelling", Karrer et al. (submitted) in Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems.

The particles were simulated using the aggregation model by Leinonen & Szyrmer (2015). Each compressed file contains files for a specific monomer type and grid resolution with the naming convention <monomer type>_res<grid resolution in mum>mum.tar.gz. The files have three header lines describing the configuration of the model and the description of the particle properties which are listed in each column. The columns contain monomer number, mass, horizontal projected area (with 40degree standard deviation for rotation of the principal axis around the z-axis), maximum dimension, horizontal projected area (aligned with principal axis in z-direction), aspect ratio (ratio of length of first two principal axis), horizontal projected area with different values of the standard deviation for rotation of the principal axis around the z-axis (10degree, 20degree, 60degree), maximum dimension of the particle projected to the x-y,x-z,y-z,y-x,x-z,y-z axis.

The other files contain height profiles simulated with McSnow and are named according to Table 6 in Karrer et al. (submitted, JAMES). Different timesteps are separated by a header (e.g. #"     0.0 min"). Each column corresponds to a certain height. The columns show: height [m], number of superparticles [1/m3], number of particles [1/m3], mass concentration [kg/m3], number flux [1/m3/s], mass flux [kg/m3/s], monomer number flux [1/m3/s]. The latter 5 variables are first listed including all particles and then categorized as monomers, aggregates, rimed snow and graupel-like particles (note that the latter two are always 0 in these simulations because we deactivated riming).

Further information on the dataset is available from Karrer et al. (submitted, JAMES).
