Produzione e conservazione documentaria tra X e XI secolo in area lariana: il notaio Teodevertus e la sua clientela laica

The archive of the church of Sant’Eufemia dell’Isola Comacina contains about thirty documents dating back to the Xth Century and related to land transactions between lay people. This circumstance, unusual in the field of documentary conservation, allows us to shed light on some particular aspects. The notary Teodevertus stands out for his productivity: we can follow his career, distinguished by legal competence and ability to establish himself in different places. From the documents he drew emerges the image of a clientele made of lay landowners who belonged to a middle social level, were familiar with documents, were able to preserve them and above all to use them in various situations.
