Pottery Terminology Intrinsic factors
Authors/Creators
Description
This German-English terminology is a collection of terms used to describe intrinsic factors of pottery within the field of archaeology. The division into intrinsic and extrinsic factors was proposed by Rice 2015 and adopted in order to structure the terms and aid in the identification of word pairs. Some terms were reconciled to wikidata.
Intrinsic factors encompass material, production/technology, shape/form, surface treatment, taphonomy, size/measurements. Extrinsic factors include dating/chronology, origin/provenance/provenience, classification method, wares, evaluation methods.
Greek vessel shapes were included here for the sake of completeness, however, the coverage by kerameikos.org is more comprehensive.
