Description

The report presents the results of work on assessment of the possibility of SiPM application in two detectors:  in a muon scintillation counter which was created by scientists of Novosibirsk State University and Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics for the gamma-observatory TAIGA, and in ASHIPH Cherenkov counter (Aerogel, wavelength SHIfter, and PHotomultiplier) for particle identification system for Super-Charm-Tau Factory. In the first part the replacement of vacuum PMT to SiPM was planned. In the second – evaluation of possibility of SiPM operation in photon counting mode at low temperatures.

Short overviews of TAIGA and Super-Charm-Tau Factory projects are given in the presentation, as well as justification of the aims relevance. After that the results of work are presented. That is demonstration of the possibility of muon signal registration in considered detector using the matrix of SiPMs. The greater number of photoelectrons was obtained in comparison with registration of light by PMT. Thus, the feasibility of replacement PMT to SiPMs was proved.

In the second part of the work the temperature dependence of frequency of SiPM noise was obtained. The temperature was found experimentally to which it is necessary to cool the system to achieve the required level of noise event probability during the time of Cherenkov light registration. This level of cooling would allow to create a cheaper identification system then FARICH, which was initially proposed in the project of Super-Charm-Tau Factory.
