Figure 2 Cataglyphis species show a great diversity of reproductive systems. (a) Classical sexual reproduction in hymenopterans: Males derive from arrhenotoky, whereas females (workers and queens) derive from sexual reproduction. (b) In some populations of C. cursor, conditional use of sex allows for the production of both males and queens by parthenogenesis, whereas workers derive from sexual reproduction. (c) In the altisquamis group, males and queens derive from parthenogenesis, whereas workers derive from interlineage fertilization.
