Η αστυνόμευση στη βενετοκρατούμενη Κρήτη (13ος-17ος αι.) / Policing in Venetian Crete (13th-17th centuries) (in Greek)

Abstract:

Ελληνικά: Η παρούσα μεταπτυχιακή διατριβή αποσκοπεί στο να παρουσιάσει τον τρόπο με τον οποίο λάμβανε χώρα η αστυνόμευση στην βενετοκρατούμενη Κρήτη. Συγκεκριμένα, πριν τη νεώτερη περίοδο (18ος-19ος αι.) καθήκοντα αστυνομικού χαρακτήρα (π.χ. περιπολίες με σκοπό την τήρηση της δημόσιας τάξης, διαλεύκανση υποθέσεων μέσω ανάκρισης μαρτύρων και υπόπτων, και καταδίωξη παρανόμων) διενεργούνταν όχι από ένα ενιαίο σώμα, αλλά από πολλά και διαφορετικά σώματα. Αυτό ίσχυε και για την Βενετία και της αποικίες της, συμπεριλαμβανομένου του «βασιλείου» της Κρήτης. Θα παρουσιαστούν λοιπόν λεπτομερώς οι φορείς που ασκούσαν αστυνομικού χαρακτήρα καθήκοντα στην Κρήτη την περίοδο αυτή, τόσο στα αστικά κέντρα όσο και στην ύπαιθρο, σε σχέση με τη διενέργεια των εν λόγω καθηκόντων από μέρους τους. Ακόμη, θα παρουσιαστεί το σύστημα «αυτό-αστυνόμευσης» που εφαρμοζόταν στην Κρήτη από τις βενετικές αρχές. Αυτό συνίστατο στην καταδίκη σε εξορία και επικήρυξη ασύλληπτων εγκληματιών, με αμοιβή για όσους συλλάμβαναν ή σκότωναν τους εγκληματίες, κάτι που επέτρεπε και στον γενικό πληθυσμό να ασκήσει καθήκοντα αστυνομικού χαρακτήρα.

Η συμβολή αυτής της διατριβής έγκειται στο γεγονός ότι το ζήτημα της αστυνόμευσης στον λατινοκρατούμενο ελληνικό χώρο γενικά, και στη βενετοκρατούμενη Κρήτη ειδικότερα, είναι ελλιπώς μελετημένο. Έτσι η διατριβή αυτή αποσκοπεί στο να παραστήσει λεπτομερώς, και να διαφωτίσει περαιτέρω, τις τόσο αναγκαίες για την τήρηση της δημόσιας τάξης δραστηριότητες αστυνομικού χαρακτήρα που λάμβαναν χώρα στο νησί κατά την περίοδο αυτή του παρελθόντος του.

English: The present Master’s thesis aims to present the manner in which policing in Venetian Crete took place. Specifically, before the modern period (18th-19th century), policing duties (e.g. patrols with the aim of keeping public order, investigation of cases via the interrogation of witnesses and suspects, and pursuit of criminals) were performed not by a single force, but by many different forces. This was also the case for Venice and her colonies, including the regno di Candia. Thus, the various forces performing policing duties in Crete during this period, in the urban centres as well as in the countryside, will be presented in detail, focusing on the performance of said duties from their part. Furthermore, the system of “self-policing” that was implemented in Crete by the Venetian authorities will also be presented. Specifically, criminals that couldn’t be arrested were convicted with exile and a bounty for them was proclaimed, with rewards for those that arrested or killed the criminals, something that allowed the general population to also exercise policing duties.

The contribution of this work lies in the fact that the subject of policing in the Latin-occupied Greek areas in general, and in Venetian Crete in particular, is rather neglected. Thus this work aims to depict in detail, and to further illuminate, the necessary for keeping the public order policing duties that took place in the island of Crete during this period of her past.
