Pyen 850 wordlist, Speaker A

Draft English/Burmese/Shan wordlist and files for 850 Pyen words collected from "Speaker A."

Part I (Files 1-350):

Recording quality improved significantly when recorders were changed after item 67. Whistling is deleted throughout most of 1-67 because of the poor recording quality.

Multiple misspellings or errors exist in the translated Burmese used in this draft wordlist, e.g. 1, 6 and 14. 14 is translated into Burmese as 'waist'; the mistake was noticed and 'wrist' was correctly recorded.

Shan loan words noted during the recording (possibly other words as well): 27, 43, 49, 103 (and in 104), 106, 113, 120 (and in 119), 132, 155 (first two syllables), 159, 160, 167, 186 (and in 187), 199, 200 (first two syllables), 228, the second syllable of both terms for 234, 248 (last two syllables), 250, 259, 262 (Shan/Burmese), 263, 265, 290, 293 (second syllable), 297 (final syllable), 307 (possibly the second syllable), 311, 312 (first syllable), 314 (second two syllables), 315 (first two syllables and final syllable), 316 (sixth syllable), 318 (first syllable), 319 (first and final syllables), 325 (first two syllables), 326 (second two syllables), 334 (first two syllables, Shan/Burmese), 335 (second through fourth syllables, Shan/Burmese), 347 (first syllable), 349 (first two syllables) and 350 (first two syllables, Shan/Burmese). 

Burmese loan words noted during the recording (possibly other words as well): 189 (first two syllables), 242, 262 (Shan/Burmese), 270 (first three syllables), 275 (first two syllables), 334 (first two syllables, Shan/Burmese), 335 (second through fourth syllables, Shan/Burmese) and 350 (first two syllables, Shan/Burmese).  

Two terms were recorded for each of the following items: 30 'breath out' and 'breath in', 102 'intestinal worm' (two different kinds of intestinal worm), 178 'to be impatient', 201, 202,  204 (first 'grandfather', then 'grandmother'), 215, 222 (first 'maternal relative', then 'paternal relative'), 234, 251 and 324.

Speaker A did not recall 66, 264 and 323 existing in the Pyen language.

In 74 'to squat', a Shan word meaning 'to cross legs' is used, but the phrase has been changed in Pyen to mean 'squat'.

157 is recorded as 156; 156 is recorded as 157.

219 'nephew' was recorded as 'niece or granddaughter'.

220 'niece' can also mean 'granddaughter'.

The term in 205 must be followed by a person's name to mean 'uncle'. Without a person's name, the term means 'father'. To protect the speaker's privacy, the final syllable with the name has been deleted, though left in the whistle.

230 'fiance' and 231 'fiancee' are the same term in Pyen.

235 'clan' is a term found in Pyen and Jingpho, but not in Burmese or Shan.

The additional word 'Pyen' was recorded after 235.

Speaker A notes that the first syllable of 299 is the same as the Shan word except for a different tone.

305 is the same as 304, so 305 was not recorded.

Speaker A knows 313 in Pyen, but could not remember the word at the time of recording.
