ТЕОРІЯ МОВЛЕННЄВОЇ АКОМОДАЦІЇ ТА ПРОБЛЕМИ КЕРУВАННЯ ДИСКУРСОМ

Description

The focus of the article is on the communicative phenomenon of discourse management (DM), viewed in the light of the speech accommodation theory (SAT), which models and predicts scripts of individuals’ communicative behavior. In conformity with this theory, speakers use language in order to perform speech actions – more complex, compared to traditional speech acts, fragments of speech activities, which include sets of steps, strategies and tactics the speaker resorts to achieve a set goal. Speech actions are to be analyzed in a broader communicative context as instruments of managing discourse by the speaker according to a previously drafted plan, which determines lexical and syntactic structure of the utterances preferred in the given situation, their form, sequence, etc. DM is regarded as a mechanism of modifying the illocutionary force of an utterance by mitigation or intensification. Both strategies are equal in that they both to an equal degree contribute to interactants’ mutual maintenance of ’face’ and act as effective means of discourse manipulation.
