Uvitellina vanelli Rudolphi 1819

Description

U. vanelli (Rudolphi, 1819)

Syns. U. keri Yamaguti, 1933; U. tageri Yamaguti, 1933

Type host. Northern lapwing, Vanellus vanellus (Linnaeus) (Charadriiformes: Charadriidae)—Macko (1961), Pavlovskaya (1962), Cordero del Campillo et al. (1980), Uchida et al. (1991).

Type locality. Based on museum specimens, Vienna, Austria; type locality not known.

Additional hosts. Grey-headed lapwing, Vanellus cinereus (Blyth) (Syn. Microsarcops cinereus [Blyth]) (Charadriiformes: Charadriidae)— Yamaguti (1933), Uchida et al. (1991); greater yellowlegs, Tringa melanoleuca (Gmelin) (Charadriiformes: Scolopacidae)— McNeil et al. (1995, 1996).

Additional localities. Mie and Niigata Prefectures, Japan—Yamaguti (1933), Uchida et al. (1991); Czechoslovakia—Macko (1961); USSR (CIS)— Pavlovskaya (1962); Andalusia, Spain—Cordero del Campillo et al. (1980); Venezuela—McNeil et al. (1995, 1996); Ukraine & Moldavia—see NHMUK on-line Host-Parasite Database.

Previously proposed synonyms. Haematotrephus lanceolatum (Wedl, 1858); Haematotrephus consimile Nicoll, 1914; Haematotrephus adelphus Johnston, 1917 (= Uvitellina adelphus [Johnston, 1917]); U. pseudocotylea Witenberg, 1923; U. magniembria Witenberg, 1923; U. simile (Stossich, 1902); Cyclocoelum (U.) dollfusi Tseng, 1930 (= U. dollfusi [Tseng, 1930]); Uvitellina keri Yamaguti, 1933; Uvitellina tageri Yamaguti, 1933; U. macroisophaga Hannum & Wilson, 1934; Cyclocoelum obscurum (Leidy, 1887); U. adelphus (Johnston, 1917); Cyclocoelum titiri Chatterji, 1958 (= Haematotrephus titiri [Chatterji, 1958] n. comb.); Haematotrephus (Haematotrephus) lobivanelli Gupta, 1958; Haematotrephus (U.) kaniharensis Gupta, 1958 (= Uvitellina kaniharensis [Gupta, 1958]); and U. indica Siddiqi & Jairajpuri, 1962 — Dubois (1965).

Remarks. Originally described as Monostoma vanelli Rudolphi, 1819, this species was redescribed by Bashkirova (1950), who considered it to be in Uvitellina. We support the synonomies of both U. keri and U. tageri with U. vanelli as proposed by Dubois (1965) because both are virtually identical to this species. In addition to measurements, these two species are like U. vanelli by having the uterine loops overreaching the ceca laterally, the posterior-most uterine loops terminating anterior to the anterior testis and they are all from species of the same genus of charadriiform birds; U. tageri being from the same host species. No oral or ventral sucker described— Bashkirova (1950).
