Description

S. ovopunctatum (Stossich, 1902) n. comb.

Type host. Eurasian curlew, Numenius arquata (Linnaeus) (Charadriiformes: Scolopacidae).

Type locality. Europe; specific type locality unknown.

Additional hosts. Spotted redshank, Tringa erythropus (Pallas) (Syn. Totanus fuscus Linnaeus) (Charadriiformes: Scolopacidae)— Kossack (1911); Wilson’s phalarope,

Phalaropus tricolor (Vieillot) (Charadriiformes: Scolopacidae)— Tantalean et al. (1992);

Unidentified charadriiform—Bona et al. (1995).

Additional localities. Turkestan, Russian Federation; Peru—Tantalean et al. (1992);

Italy — Bona et al. (1995).

Previously proposed synonyms. Cyclocoelum (Postpharyngeum) ovopunctatum Stossich, 1902 — Witenberg (1923); Haematotrephus fasciatus Stossich, 1902, Monostomum vicarium Arnsdorff, 1908 (= Selfcoelum vicarium [Arnsdorff, 1908] n. comb.), Cyclocoelum orientale Skrjabin, 1913, Cyclocoelum straightum Khan, 1935 (= Morishitium straightum [Khan, 1935]) and Cyclocoelum turusigi Yamaguti, 1939 — Dubois (1959).

Remarks. This species was originally described as Cyclocoelum ovopunctatum Stossich, 1902. Kossack (1911) examined the specimens used in the original description of this species by Stossich (1902), concluded that some of the specimens represented a second species (Cyclocoelum vicarium [Arnsdroff, 1908]), and redescribed S. ovopunctatum n. comb. using those specimens that conformed to this species. This species was considered to be a synonym of Cyclocoelum obscurum (Leidy, 1887) by Joyeux & Baer (1927). It has a postpharyngeal genital pore and the vitelline fields are not confluent posteriorly, placing it in Selfcoelum. No oral or ventral sucker described— Stossich (1902); Kossack (1911) and Dubois (1959).
