Symplectoscyphus curvatus Jaderholm 1917

Description

Symplectoscyphus curvatus (Jäderholm, 1917)

Symplectoscyphus curvatus — Totton 1930: 192–193, fig. 40a, b, pl. 2, figs 1–3; Peña Cantero, 2010a: 36 (synonymy); 2010b: 769–770; 2012: 861; 2013: 132–133; 2014a: 1724, fig. 6b.

Material examined. Stn 8, few stems up to 20 mm high on Schizotricha turqueti (MNCN 2.03/635); Stn 25, numerous stems up to 80 mm high on tube of polychaete, with gonothecae (NIWA 117574); Stn 130, stem fragment 25 mm long (NIWA 117575); Stn 205, colony with six stems up to 19 mm high on stem of unidentifiable hydroid growing on pebbles (NIWA 117576); Stn 206, colony with nine stems up to 20 mm high on axis of dead gorgonian (MNCN 2.03/636).

Ecology and distribution. Eurybathic species (Peña Cantero 2010a), collected at depths from 49 (Peña Cantero 2008) to 2043 m (Peña Cantero 2012); present material between 110 and 1014 m, epibiotic on tube of polychaete, axis of dead gorgonian and Schizotricha turqueti, and with gonothecae in February.

Circum-Antarctic distribution (Stepanjants 1979). Recently reported from off Peter I Island (Peña Cantero 2010b), Bellingshausen Sea (Peña Cantero 2012), and off Low Island (Peña Cantero 2013), in West Antarctica; and off Queen Mary Coast (Peña Cantero 2014a), in East Antarctica. See Peña Cantero (2010a) for previous records. In the Ross Sea, already known off Cape Adare (Totton 1930). Present material off Cape Adare and Possession Islands.
