Description

Stegella lobata (Vanhöffen, 1910)

Campanularia verticillata var. grandis Hickson & Gravely, 1907: 23, pl. 4 fig. 25.

Campanularia lobata — Ritchie, 1913: 21.

Stegella grandis — Jäderholm, 1926: 3; Totton, 1930: 153, fig. 10a–c.

Stegella lobata —Peña Cantero et al., 2004: 2278–2280 (synonymy); Peña Cantero, 2006: 934–935; 2008: 453; 2010b: 763–764, fig. 2a–d; 2014a: 1715; Soto Ángel & Peña Cantero, 2015: 958 fig. 2g.

Material examined. Stn 52, two stems up to 23 mm high on Oswaldella stepanjantsae Peña Cantero, Svoboda & Vervoort, 1997 (NIWA 117505); Stn 112, one stem fragment 35 mm long, with two hydrothecae, basibiont of Abietinella operculata (Jäderholm, 1903) (MNCN 2.03/542).

Ecology and distribution. Shelf species (Peña Cantero et al. 2004), found at depths from 10 (Naumov & Stepanjants 1972) to 700 m (Naumov & Stepanjants 1962); present material between 152 and 351 m, epibiotic on Oswaldella stepanjantsae and basibiont for colonies of Abietinella operculata.

Circum-Antarctic distribution (Peña Cantero et al. 2004). Recently reported from off Livingston Island (Peña Cantero 2006, 2008), Peter I Island (Peña Cantero 2010b), and the South Sandwich Islands (Soto Ángel & Peña Cantero 2015), in West Antarctica, and off Queen Mary Coast (Peña Cantero 2014a), in East Antarctica. See Peña Cantero et al. (2004) for previous records. In the Ross Sea, already known from McMurdo (Hickson & Gravely 1907; Totton 1930), off Cape Royds (Ritchie 1913) and from Discovery Inlet (Jäderholm 1926). Present material comes from off Cape Adare and Cape Hallet.
