Dataset on the perceived link between Mediterranean Monk Seal recovery and tourism in Torrevieja coastal areas
Creators
Description
The Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) is one of the rarest mammal species in Europe. The species' estimated population is approximately 444-600 mature individuals, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Officially extinct in Spain´s mainland, the situation underscores the need to address biodiversity conservation efforts. To mitigate this challenge, the University of Alicante (UA) headquarters in Torrevieja and its Smart Tourism Lab of the University of Alicante (TI·LAB),, along with FauNatura association, and the Department of the Environment and the Department of Tourism of the Torrevieja City Council organised several activities to discuss challenges and opportunities for biodiversity conservation in coastal cities" that included a sensitization and awareness campaign. The campaign showcased realistic sculptures of the seal, and was held in different locations, It also contemplated a survey in Spanish and English to collect visitors’ perceptions of biodiversity and conservation of Torrevieja´s beaches. This data article sheds light on the study´s objectives, importance, and methodological approach. The study's main goal is to evaluate the public perception of Torrevieja's biodiversity and beach conservation. It can also help destination agents to consider more conservation policies and strategies.
