Description

Abstract:
The time is ripe to pierce the smokescreen over the phenomenon of reading in the context of the negative annual results on the state of reading skills (measured by PISA, PIRLS, TIMSS). Such a debate is also imperative as a corrective to the failed methodologies proposed as educational reforms for initial literacy in reading. Exploring the reasons for this smokescreen is necessary to make sense of the vastly dispersed and incoherent scientific knowledge about reading. The object of the study are the factors and reasons for the failure in reading of Bulgarian 15-year-old students in the international PISA tests. The analysis is based on the critical results of seven surveys - PISA 2000, PISA 2006, PISA 2009, PISA 2012, PISA 2015, PISA 2018 and PISA 2022. The purpose is to reveal a different perspective on the problems of the reader and reading in this country that we believe are imperative for research and revision. The aims are to seek arguments and evidence primarily from a communication perspective and in the findings of sociological studies, and to summarise the factors that might account for the continuing anxiety in Bulgaria about 'mass non-reading' or the proclaimed 'collapse in reading'.
