Distribution: Circumboreal, tundra and forested regions of Palearctic. Afghanistan, Algeria, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan (C Honshu), Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mongolia, Netherlands, New Zealand (introduced), Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tajikistan, USA (C California, N New Mexico, N Iowa and Maryland).

Conservation: CITES – Appendix III (India) as M. erminea ferghanae; IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: Revised by Eger (1990). Reviewed by C. M. King (1983). Youngman (1982) and Abramov (1999) placed erminea in the subgenus Mustela. Synonyms allocated according to Ellerman and Morrison-Scott (1951), Hall (1951, 1981), and C. M. King (1983).
