El platero placentino Luis Navarrete. Aportaciones documentales sobre su trayectoria biográfica y artística

The text reconstructs the biographical and artistic trajectory of the silversmith Luis Navarrete, active in Plasencia during the second half of the 16th century, based on archival and notarial documentation. He belonged to a family of silversmiths, in which his son also worked, and his workshop became one of the most significant in the city, producing liturgical objects for both the Cathedral and various parish churches across the diocese. Many of his works, now lost, included chalices, processional crosses, incense burners, cruets, and navetas for churches in Plasencia, Tejeda de Tiétar, Aldeanueva de la Vera, Monroy, Plasenzuela, and Garganta la Olla. Among the surviving pieces, the mannerist base of the Tejeda de Tiétar monstrance and the processional cross of Plasenzuela are particularly notable, displaying the refined adaptation of late Renaissance decorative vocabulary: punched backgrounds, cartouches, cherub heads, fruit garlands, and baluster-style nodes. The text emphasizes the importance of Navarrete’s workshop in disseminating mannerist forms within Extremaduran religious silverwork and highlights his involvement in valuations and commissions alongside other notable silversmiths. The study concludes that Navarrete was one of the leading silversmiths in Plasencia of his time, with an extensive and influential production, despite the partial loss of his works.
