3rd Data Release of Project Severe Weather Archive of the Philippines (SWAP DR3)

Description

Project Severe Weather Archive of the Philippines (SWAP) issues its 3rd Data Release or SWAP DR3. It features the following:

  • Improvements to the Geographic decimal coordinates (i.e. latitude-longitude pairs) for accuracy purposes,

  • The number of severe weather events have doubled to more than 1000 cases/events/reports. Due to this, the number of potential sources has been revised from a maximum of 3 sources (DR1 to DR2) to 5 sources for this major release,

  • The idea of technical reports was unfortunately scrapped, but was replaced instead in form of preprints/manuscript/journal articles,

  • Improvements to the documentation, particularly to the metadata in PDF, have additional "indicators" for accuracy and reliability purposes, and

  • SWAP DR3 will continue to feature more proximity rawinsonde observations (RAOBs or proximity sounding profiles) as queried and analyzed through SounderPy of Gillett (2024). However, for this major update, we are importing back the SWAP DR2 Soundings for the moment - SWAP DR3 Soundings to many cases will be soon featured in an incremental update (apologies for the delay).

At the moment, we are also conducting an additional research with regards to the hail climatology of the Philippines (Manalo et al. in preparation), and additional case studies; (a) 13 August 2021 Hailstorm in the Province of Bulacan and (b) 27 May 2024 Tornadic Supercell in the Province of Pampanga. The 13 August 2021 Hailstorm case study is already available in arXiv as a preprint (also under review in Springer's APJAS). You can read the manuscript to this link

File inclusion of SWAP DR3;

  • 3 standard CSV file formats containing tornadoes, hail, and waterspout reports (can easily imported to Pandas or GeoPandas),

  • 1 documentation file compiling the severe weather reports/events and containing hyperlinks/sources/evidences. This includes few, basic data visualization of each severe weather phenomena, and

  • 2 zip files containing SWAP DR2's proximity soundings (either observed or from ERA5 Reanalysis queried in SounderPy as mentioned before), limited to several cases of tornadoes and hail events,

Kindly see the attached table I created in this announcement for the versions of Project SWAP and other details. If you have comments, kindly use the SWAP Contact Form below.
