The first cases of Whooper Swan (Cygnus cygnus) breeding in Rivne region, West Ukraine

Description

The first cases of Whooper Swan (Cygnus cygnus) breeding in Rivne region, West Ukraine. - O.V. Dobrynskyi. - Berkut. 29 (1-2). 2020. - The Whooper Swan was formerly occurred in Rivne region mainly during migrations and sometimes in winter and in breeding period. I discovered the first cases of breeding on fish-farming ponds in the north-west part of the region in 2020. Two pairs nested near the village of Vovchytsi (Zarichne district) and one pair near the village of Berezyna (Volodymyrets district). According to information from workers of the fish-farm, a pair of Whooper Swans bred near Vovchytsi also in 2019. This is the second area of breeding of the species in Ukraine (since 2005 Whooper Swans nest in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone). Birds expanded from the north. [Ukrainian].

Abstract (Ukrainian)

Лебідь-кликун раніше зустрічався в Рівненській області в основному під час міграцій, зрідка на зимівлі та у гніздовий період. Вперше виявлений на гніздуванні у 2020 р. на риборозплідних ставках у північно-західній частині області. Дві пари гніздилися біля с. Вовчиці Зарічненського району і ще одна – біля с. Березина Володимирецького району. За даними працівників рибгоспу, біля с. Вовчиці кликуни гніздилися й у 2019 р. Це другий район гніздування виду в Україні (з 2005 р. кликуни гніздяться в Чорнобильській зоні відчуження).
