Gellius tubuloramosus Dendy 1924

Description

Gellius tubuloramosus Dendy, 1924

(Fig. 3L)

Gellius tubuloramosus Dendy, 1924: 323 (no illustration).

Haliclona tubuloramosa; Burton 1932: 266.

Sigmadocia tubuloramosus; Bergquist & Warne 1980: 24, pl. 9a; Kelly et al. 2009: 44 (listed only).

This species was described by Dendy from North Cape, New Zealand, approximate coordinates 34.4167°S 173.0833°E, depth 128 m (wet holotype BMNH 1923.10.1.61). The genus Gellius Gray, 1867 is currently considered a subgenus of Haliclona Grant, 1841 and transfer of the present species to Haliclona (Gellius) created a junior secondary homonymy with syntype specimens described by Carter (1887: 70, pl. 6 fig. 1) from the Mergui archipelago as Isodictya simulans var. tubuloramosa. Isodictya simulans (Johnston, 1842 as Halichondria) is currently Haliclona (Haliclona) simulans, a species confined to European waters. Two syntypes are kept in the collection of the Natural History Museum, BMNH 1887.6.1.7 and 1887.6.1.14. Transferred to Haliclona, the combination became Haliclona tubuloramosa (Carter, 1887), which then became a senior secondary homonym of Gellius tubuloramosus Dendy, 1924, currently Haliclona (Gellius) tubuloramosa. The two species differ a.o. by the absence of sigmas in Carter’s tubuloramosa. To remove the homonymy, I propose here Haliclona (Gellius) arthuri nom.nov. named after Arthur Dendy, for the New Zealand species.
